A narrow strip of land fully fertile and is almost impossibly green throughout. It clings to the south western flank of the Indian peninsula lies between the high western ghats in the east and the vast Arabian Sea in the west. It is a network of lakes, canals, etsuaries opening into the sea. So the travellers say that the every other step is a destination of its own in Kerala. Though the synonym "God's own country" has its historic and divine background, this emerald crescent of land contains jungles, beaches, mountains, lakes and some of the most romantic natural resources in the world which make the place really "God's own". The mountaineous region of the state is dominated by the high ranges of Sahya Parvatha (mountain) which rise to an average height of 1520 mts with a number of peaks towering over 2400 mtrs. The countryside is really splendid with the full green rice fields over which the generations of slimwaisted Kerala women have worked, and the fresh green banana groves. The south-eastern part is full with spices like cardamom, pepper and so on. The coconut trees looks from the air like the whorls on a giant's head - spread all over the state. Economically Kerala compares with some developed countries. People are wealthier, healthier, hygenic and better literated. It is a heaven of religious harmony. One can find ancient hindu temples sitting serenely near gaily painted colonial style churches and splendid mosques. Commercial harmony and religious tolerance is an essential part of Kerala's culture and heritage which makes this greenland a peace loving one.
Performing and visual arts play an eminent role in Kerala's cultural life. The place is ofcourse became internationally acclaimed for its unique and spectacular masked dance - drama - Kathakali. The other common dance forms practised are Theyyam, Mohiniyattom, Koodiyattom and Krishnanattom. The martial art of Kerala - Kalaripayattu is a fascinating one in a class of its own.
